Kilimanjaro packing list to make your Mount Kilimanjaro climb as safe and comfortable as possible, you’ll need to bring important gear and supplies.
To help you prepare for your climb, we have compiled a comprehensive Kilimanjaro packing list.

Kilimanjaro packing list during Kilimanjaro trekking, there are five main climate zones, from the warm, humid forest and lower slopes to the bitterly cold summit zone with glaciers, ice, and snow.
Kilimanjaro weather conditions include sunny, windy, and rainy. Prepare yourself accordingly.
Camp equipment, food, cooking facilities, and other shared items are provided by us.
There will be a duffel bag with all your gear carried by porters, and you will carry your own daypack during the trekking day.

THE COMPLETE KILIMANJARO PACKING LIST
When packing for your climb, you should plan your clothing appropriately.
We recommend the following items:
- Bottom Base Layer
- 4-5 Pairs of Underwear
- 3-4 Short Sleeve
- 1 Insulated Trekking Pants
- 1-2 Long Sleeve Hiking Shirts
- 1-2 Pairs of Hiking Trousers
- 1 Insulated Winter Jacket
- 1 Polartec Fleece Jacket
- 1 Hard Shell Jacket
Kilimanjaro packing list - Basic Equipment
The bladder/bottle can carry 3 liters of water.
Alternatively, you can buy 2 x 1.5-liter wide-mouth Nalgene bottles or 2 liters platypus + 1-liter water bottle.
Disposable plastic bottles are not permitted on Kilimanjaro.
On Kilimanjaro, it can get dusty. Wear a neck gaiter or bandana. Buff or Hoo-Rag Headwear is the most versatile option.
Sleeping bag and compression sack: You will need a 4-season or -20 Deg C sleeping bag.
We recommend Mountain Hardwear or The North Face. You can rent sleeping bags from us in Tanzania.
Trekking poles: Trekking poles can reduce the impact on your joints by as much as 20%.
Great for descending Kili! We recommend the adjustable Black Diamond trekking poles.
To carry your main gear, we recommend an 80-90L waterproof duffle bag. Larger rucksacks (>65L) can also be used.
Your main gear will be carried by a porter (up to 15kg). You will need to carry your own daypack.
It should be at least 30-40L. Osprey daypacks are recommended.
Kilimanjaro packing list - Head
A warm beanie-style hat: Choose a version of a hat that is either knitted or fleeced for extra warmth. North Face, Berghaus, and Columbia all make good outdoor beanies.
Sun hat: If you aren’t wearing a neck gaiter, choose a hat with a wide brim for protection
You will need a headlamp with good light output for any late-night toilet runs and for summit night. Petzl makes the best and most affordable headlamps.
If you live above 4,500m, you should wear sunglasses with high UV protection. Julbo is a great brand of mountain sunglasses, but any brand with high UV protection will do.
Kilimanjaro packing list - Hands and Feet
Warm gloves or mittens: For cold nights and for the summit push, we recommend heavyweight, insulated gloves that are water-resistant. We recommend The North Face and Black Diamond.
For lower slopes, we recommend lightweight, fleece, or quick-drying fabric gloves. Berghaus and The North Face make great lightweight gloves.
Walking boots: We recommend mid-weight walking boots with good ankle support. Salomon, Scarpa, Hi-Tec, and Merrell are recommended brands
We recommend that you bring a pair of training shoes or sandals to wear around camp after a day of trekking.
Socks: 3-4 pairs of outer socks and 2-3 pairs of liner socks. We also recommend bringing 1 x thick thermal socks for summit night. Merino wool is the best material and Bridgedale or Smartwool make good trekking socks.
Garters: Keep your trousers clean in wet, muddy, or dusty conditions.
Kilimanjaro packing list - Upper Body
1 x thermal base layer, ideally made of merino wool. Icebreaker is a recommended brand.
Short-sleeved shirts: 2 x super-lightweight, moisture-wicking shirts. Icebreaker, Under Armour, Columbia, and Berghaus are recommended brands
Long sleeve shirt: Choose a light or medium-weight, moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirt (2x). Under Armour, Icebreaker, and Berghaus all make excellent breathable trekking shirts.
A mid-weight Polartec fleece jacket is ideal for climbing Kilimanjaro. The North Face, Berghaus, and Helly Hansen all make great fleeces.
The cold nights and summit push will require an insulated jacket, such as a down or Primaloft jacket. Brands such as The North Face, Rab, Arc’Teryx, and Mountain Hardwear are recommended.
A hardshell outer jacket protects you from the elements due to its water/windproof nature. The best material is Goretex. The North Face, Arc’teryx, Berghaus, and Mountain Hardwear are recommended brands.
Kilimanjaro packing list - Legs
Leggings: Thermal or fleece bottom layers for your legs. Merino wool is preferred. We recommend Icebreaker.
Trekking trousers: Light or medium weight (x1). Convertible trousers are available. Craghoppers and Columbia are recommended brands.
To protect yourself from the elements, you need a good pair of waterproof/windproof hardshell trousers. Ideally, they should be Goretex. The North Face, Patagonia, and Arc’Teryx are all good outerwear brands.
Kilimanjaro packing list - Other bits and pieces
Charge your devices in the hotels before and after the trek with a plug adapter. Tanzania’s standard voltage and frequency are 230 V and 50 Hz, respectively. Power sockets are type D / G.
